Visit Oxford
An independent visitor's guide
to a city built from one stone

About

What this guide is, and what it isn’t

An independent guide to Oxford, written by people who walk it. No bookings, no tickets, no affiliations — and no numbers that expire.

Visit Oxford is not the city council, not a tourist board, and not the University or any of its colleges. Nobody here can get you into anything. What we can do is explain how the place works: which kinds of gate open and which don’t, which museums reward an hour and which reward three, where the city stops being stone and starts being meadow, and where to eat that isn’t on the High.

Three editorial rules

No prices, hours or listings. All of it expires, and a guide that lies to you about opening times is worse than no guide. Where something is time-sensitive we say so and tell you to check on the day.

Never assert a college is open. Access changes with the term, the exams and whatever is happening in hall that evening. We describe the pattern and the signals; the porters’ lodge decides.

Nothing here is bought. Supporters keep the guide going and get a logo and a line. They do not get recommendations, and no money passes through us for anything you might book.

Where the photographs come from

Every photograph is of real Oxford, credited where it sits. No college crests, arms or University branding appear as the subject of a picture — a deliberate choice, because this guide is not speaking for those institutions.
